چکیده

We study the effect of a close encounter of a passing star on the shape of the inner Oort Cloud, using the impulse approximation. The deviation of the perturbed Oort Cloud from sphericity adds angular fluctuations to the brightness of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) due to thermal emission by the comets. An encounter with a solar-mass star at an impact parameter of 2100AU, as expected based on the abundance and velocity dispersion of stars in the solar neighborhood, leads to a quadrupole moment C2 = 4.5(3.5) × 10−15, 6.7(1.1) × 10−12, 1.1(0.11) × 10−9 at ν = 30, 353, 545GHz, respectively in intensity and (temperature) fluctuations. We also quantify the quadrupole spectral distortions produced by the Scattered Disc, which will exist irregardless of any perturbation and the subsequent shape of the Oort Cloud. For comparison, the temperature fluctuation quadrupole moment predicted by the current cosmological model is C2 = 1.76 × 10−10, which corresponds to fluctuation in the CMB intensity of C2 = 2.9 × 10−10, 6.8 × 10−9, 1.6 × 10−8 at ν = 30, 353, 545GHz. Finally, we discuss how a measurement of the anisotropic spectral distortions could be used to constrain the trajectory of the closest stellar fly-by.

The Imprint of Lithium Recombination on the Microwave Background Anisotropies

Following Loeb (2001), we explore the imprint of the resonant 6708Å line opacity of neutral lithium on the temperature and polarization anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) at observed wavelengths of 250–350μm (0.9–1.2 THz). We show that if lithium recombines in the redshift range of z = 400–500 as expected, then the standard CMB anisotropies would be significantly modified in ...

Braneworld tensor anisotropies in the CMB

Cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations provide in principle a high-precision test of models which are motivated by M theory. We set out the framework of a program to compute the tensor anisotropies in the CMB that are generated in braneworld models. In the simplest approximation, we show the braneworld imprint as a correction to the power spectra for standard temperature and polarizatio...

Secondary anisotropies of the CMB

The Cosmic Microwave Background fluctuations provide a powerful probe of the dark ages of the universe through the imprint of the secondary anisotropies associated with the reionisation of the universe and the growth of structure. We review the relation between the secondary anisotropies and and the primary anisotropies that are directly generated by quantum fluctuations in the very early unive...

Inflation , quantum fields , and CMB anisotropies 1

Inflationary cosmology has proved to be the most successful at predicting the properties of the anisotropies observed in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). In this essay we show that quantum field renormalization significantly influences the generation of primordial perturbations and hence the expected measurable imprint of cosmological inflation on the CMB. However, the new predictions rem...

CMB anisotropies caused by gravitational waves: A parameter study

Anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background radiation due to gravity waves are investigated. An initial spectrum of gravity waves may have been induced during an epoch of inflation. We study the propagation of such a spectrum in different Friedmann backgrounds with hot and cold dark matter, radiation and, possibly, a cosmological constant. We calculate its imprint as anisotropies on the cos...
